Companies House has announced that companies affected by COVID-19 can apply, through a fast-tracked online system, for a three-month extension for filing their annual accounts. Applications will be granted immediately and automatically where issues around COVID-19 are cited in support. Applications for the extension have to be made before the company’s filing deadline.
Guidance from Companies House:
- suggests that companies that have already extended their filing deadline, or shortened their accounting reference period, may not be eligible for the extension; and
- confirms that if accounts are filed late, a penalty will be applied unless a company’s application for extension has been granted (appeals against those penalties based upon COVID-19 factors will be considered on a case-by-case basis, applying existing policies).
