Shelley Cumbers

Associate Solicitor

+44 (0)1206 217078

Shelley Cumbers, who qualified as a solicitor in 2007, joined the TSP Family and Divorce Law team in June 2014 and was appointed as an associate solicitor in October 2016. Shelley advises clients on all aspects of private Family law and is able to offer an initial free telephone chat to provide general information.

Shelley, who is Colchester born and bred, attended the Gilberd School and Colchester Sixth Form College. After completing her Law degree with First Class Honours at the University of Essex, Shelley achieved a distinction in the Legal Practice Course at the Anglia Ruskin University. During her legal studies Shelley won a number of awards, including the  Palgrave Prize for best performing student in Family Law and the Sweet and Maxwell Prize for best final year student on the Law degree course. Before joining TSP, Shelley completed her training at a multi-specialist London law firm with a national reputation and, following  qualification, practised Family and Divorce law there. She has extensive experience in all aspects of private Family law and has advised a wide range of medium to high net worth clients, including those whose cases have had an international aspect.

A member of Resolution since her qualification, Shelley trained as a Collaborative Lawyer in 2012 and is committed to resolving disputes constructively and sensibly. She is also a keen legal writer, frequently contributing to a number of legal journals. In her spare time she enjoys travelling and spending quality time with her young family and with friends.

Shelley said “I have always worked in Family law and particularly enjoy helping people move on to the next chapter in their lives so that they can begin to plan for the future. I am a very good listener which I feel is an integral part of the role of a Family solicitor as we very often see clients at a time when the circumstances in which they find themselves are upsetting and stressful.”

The TSP Family team has, for a number of years, been a Leading Legal 500 team and Shelley is recommended for her work in this practice area. In 2018/19 the Legal 500 said:

“The ‘organised, efficient, compassionate and reputable’ family practice at ‘well-established, good local firm’ Thompson Smith and Puxon ‘deals with numerous areas of family law’ and ‘maintains a consistently professional approach with clients’. In terms of adult representation, areas of expertise comprise divorce and separation, cohabitation, same-sex relationships, injunctions, and pre-nuptial agreements, as well as business and property aspects. The practice also engages in matters concerning children, including residence, contact, parental responsibility, prohibited steps and specific issue orders. Clients recommend ‘diligent’ collaboratively trained solicitor Alison Cantor, who handles financial matters, agreements, and Court of Protection work, as well as working together with the firm’s conveyancing team. Practice lead Marcus Price in Clacton-on-Sea and associate Shelley Cumbers, who is both Resolution- and collaboratively trained, are also core members.”
