Pragna Chhagan, who qualified as a solicitor in April 2013, is supervised by Fiona Ashworth. She advises TSP’s clients on Wills, Powers of Attorney, and the Administration of Estates. She is also involved in Court of Protection work, and advises clients requiring a Deputyship Order to enable them to deal with the affairs of a friend or family member who has lost mental capacity and is not able to handle these matters themselves. She is based in our Colchester office.
Pragna moved to the Colchester area from London when she was a small child and attended Colchester County High School for Girls before undertaking her degree in Law with French Law at the University of Reading, which incorporated a year studying in Paris. She completed her Legal Practice Course at the College of Law Guildford and completed her training contract at a Colchester firm.
Thompson Smith and Puxon has, for a number of years, been highlighted by the Legal 500 as a Leading Firm in this practice area and in 2017 recommended Pragna for her work in this area. The Legal 500 said: “Clients describe Thompson Smith and Puxon’sprivate client department as ‘approachable, efficient, knowledgeable and empathetic’, ‘working well as a strong team’ and having ‘impressive dedication to the client’.” “ Pragna Chhagan joined from Atkins Thomson in February 2016.”
In 2018/19 the Legal 500 said “The ‘thorough, efficient and reliable’ private client department at Thompson Smith and Puxon ‘exhibits a high degree of professional experience and capability’ with ‘a caring and considerate side’ and a willingness to ‘go the extra mile’ in order to ‘provide a comprehensive and timely service’. Focus areas include will preparation, probate, trusts, tax and succession planning, registering enduring powers of attorney, and Court of Protection matters, as well as asset preservation relating to long-term residential or nursing care requirements. A large proportion of clients have a business or agricultural background. ‘Sharp-minded, sympathetic and hardworking’ Fiona Ashworth, who ‘has a wealth of experience’, leads the practice from the Colchester office and is a main contact for elderly and farming clients. In October 2017, ‘friendly and persevering’ Robert Ashworth and ‘conscientious, sympathetic and efficient’ Aileen Hirst, who ‘has a practical grasp of problems and solutions’, joined Clacton-based Sarah White at associate level. Clients further recommend ‘exceptionally professional and caring’ solicitor Adina Milleare.”
In her spare time Pragna enjoys salsa dancing, swimming, reading and meeting up and spending time with friends. She is a Dementia Friend, an Alzheimer’s Society scheme which aims to raise awareness of what it’s like to live with dementia and how people living with it can be helped. She has experience of working with elderly clients, some of whom have been diagnosed with dementia, and always tries her best to cater to their individual needs.
Pragna says “During my training I enjoyed private client work the most and I have worked in this area of the law since I qualified. The work is never routine and always interesting. The role very often requires a great deal of sensitivity as I am advising clients at what can be a difficult and distressing time, and I hope I manage to deliver this. It also involves helping clients plan for their future, which is another area of private client work that I also really enjoy.”
