Judith, who was admitted as a solicitor in 2002, is supervised by Sharon Auton. She joined the TSP Dispute Resolution team in March 2015. Based in the Colchester office, Judith undertakes all types of Dispute Resolution and Debt Recovery work for both individuals and business clients, but has a particular specialism in leasehold extensions and enfranchisement, and private and commercial defamation. Judith was made an associate solicitor in October 2017.
Judith, who was raised in Norfolk, worked for ten years as a journalist in Colchester. In 1995 she decided to take her career in another direction, studying for a law degree at the University of Essex. Following graduation she worked at the University as a tutor of contract law while studying part time for her diploma in Legal Practice at the London Guildhall University and subsequently completed a training contract with a Colchester law firm to qualify as a solicitor.
Judith has extensive experience in all aspects of Dispute Resolution and has worked on cases heard in County Court, High Court and the Court of Appealand has worked on a number of high profile public interest cases. Following a period working for a law firm in Brentwood, Judith returned to Colchester, bringing to TSP additional experience in defamation, leasehold enfranchisement and extension as well as a wide range of commercial disputes and debt recovery.
In 2005 Judith was admitted by the Master of the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury as a Notary Public, having taken her Diploma in Notarial Practice at the University of Cambridge. Her work as a Notary includes preparing and executing legal documents and attesting the authenticity of deeds and documents for use anywhere in the world.
Legal 500: In 2018/19 the firm’s Commercial Litigation team was ranked amongst the best in Essex and Judith was recommended. The Legal 500 said:
“The commercial litigation department at Thompson Smith and Puxon ‘consistently impresses with its significant breadth of skills, timely service and sound advice’, ‘making clients feel valued’. Its key focus areas include tenancy, property lease, and wills and probate disputes, with additional contract, partnership, insolvency, debt recovery, professional negligence and defamation expertise. The ‘pragmatic and supportive’ Judith Winward ‘takes a proactive approach to conflict resolution’ and became an associate in 2017. The ‘exceptional’ Sharon Auton heads the practice.”
In 2017 the Legal 500 said “Thompson Smith and Puxon’s commercial litigation department is based in Colchester and advises on matters such as contentious probate, tenancy disputes, breaches of contract, negligence, injunctions and consumer disputes. Chartered Legal Executive and head of practice Sharon Auton is also an accredited mediator. She is supported by ‘thorough and pleasant to work with’ solicitor Judith Winward, who specialises in lease extension and enfranchisements as well commercial property litigation and boundary disputes. Most of the highlights in the past year involved property litigation, commercial leases, probate and intellectual property.”
In her spare time Judith enjoys walking, especially Nordic walking. She is an active supporter of Colchester –based charity Autism Anglia, of which she is a parent trustee, and she is a founding member and steward of the Ark (Highwoods) Methodist Church in Colchester .
