Jane joined the TSP Clinical Negligence team in 2008 as a Medical Claims Advisor. Her role is to assist the Clinical Negligence solicitors with the new enquiries that we receive, to consider the medical issues and to advise people who have concerns about the quality of care they, or a member of their family, have received.
Jane has a PhD in Pharmacology, which she gained whilst working in the pharmaceutical industry. She went on to become a freelance medical writer, preparing documents for clinical submissions, as well as papers and abstracts on a wide range of issues for scientific and medical journals.
Her work in the pharmaceutical industry and as a medical writer has given her a wide-ranging medical knowledge; she understands the pertinent medical issues and which questions to ask to enable the team to put together, on the client’s behalf, as strong a medical-based case as possible.
Jane says “a big part of what I do is to give advice about how to make formal complaints – this may be the first step an individual should take before a claim can be made and often helps them to understand better the care that they or their loved one has received. I encourage them to ask very specific questions so that their specific concerns are addressed. Often the response to their complaint can be sufficient to allay their fears about the allegations of poor care. However, once they have received written responses to their questions, we can consider whether the care appears to have been poor and, if so, whether there is a claim that we can take forward on their behalf.”
The Legal 500: In 2018/19 the Thompson Smith and Puxon Clinical Negligence team was once again recommended by the Legal 500 and ranked amongst the best firms in the South East of England in this practice area. The Legal 500 said “The clinical negligence department of Thompson Smith and Puxon impresses with its ‘strong teamwork, prompt response times and appropriate advice’, as well as by ‘keeping clients fully informed throughout the process’. It represents claimants in A&E, birth injury and cerebral palsy, paediatric, psychiatric, fatal and orthopaedic matters. A recent highlight was the £1.4m settlement of a claim against an NHS Trust concerning the negligent drainage of a cyst via a shunt, which led to the claimant suffering a cardiac arrest and catastrophic brain damage.”
