Alison, who qualified as a solicitor in 1982, joined the TSP Family and Divorce Law team in 2001. Alison advises clients on all aspects of private Family law and is able to offer a free telephone chat to provide general information.

Alison studied History at the University of York and graduated in 1977. She decided to pursue a career in the law, completing her Common Professional Exam (for which she was commended by the examiners) and Law Society Finals at Manchester Polytechnic in 1980.  From there, Alison went on to complete her formal training at Aboudi Landes in Manchester working in Civil Litigation, Residential Property, Wills and Estates and Family law before qualifying as a solicitor in 1982.

Before joining TSP Alison worked in a variety of law firms in Manchester, most notably as a partner in Tranters where she ran an office dealing with a variety of matters including matrimonial work, childcare and wardship issues, crime, conveyancing, probate and cases that required Alison to introduce the prosecution of Councils under the Public Health Act 1936 for Statutory Nuisance in Housing Disrepair cases.

Alison works on a variety of Family matters at TSP, including Divorce, Financial and Property Issues, Private Law Children cases, Cohabitation Disputes, Matrimonial Conveyancing, Declarations of Trust and Court of Protection work. She says, “Family is a complex area of law. You have to draw on experience and knowledge from many other areas of law including property, wills, debt, welfare benefits, crime and litigation in order for you to give the best advice to a client; every situation has to be dealt with individually. My background in general practice assists me here.

I have been trained in Collaborative law so I can offer this option in appropriate cases. My clients often say to me that I give clear and practical advice at a time when things are stressful and uncertain.”

As well as being a Resolution-trained Collaborative lawyer Alison is a member of Resolution and an Accredited Resolution Specialist in both Private Children law and Matrimonial Finance.

The TSP Family team has, for a number of years, been a Leading Legal 500 team and Alison is recommended for her work in this practice area. In 2018/19 the Legal 500 said:

“The ‘organised, efficient, compassionate and reputable’ family practice at ‘well-established, good local firm’ Thompson Smith and Puxon ‘deals with numerous areas of family law’ and ‘maintains a consistently professional approach with clients’. In terms of adult representation, areas of expertise comprise divorce and separation, cohabitation, same-sex relationships, injunctions, and pre-nuptial agreements, as well as business and property aspects. The practice also engages in matters concerning children, including residence, contact, parental responsibility, prohibited steps and specific issue orders. Clients recommend ‘diligent’ collaboratively trained solicitor Alison Cantor, who handles financial matters, agreements, and Court of Protection work, as well as working together with the firm’s conveyancing team. Practice lead Marcus Price in Clacton-on-Sea and associate Shelley Cumbers, who is both Resolution- and collaboratively trained, are also core members.”
