In 2018, the government launched a scheme to enable people in England and Wales to apply for a part refund of the registration fee paid to the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) to register either Enduring Powers of Attorney or Lasting Powers of Attorney between 1st April 2013 and 31st March 2017.

The refund was ordered as the processing costs for registration reduced significantly during this period without the OPG reducing the fee to applicants.

The refund is typically between £34- £54 per registration depending on what original fee was paid and will include 0.5% interest. There are still many refunds unclaimed.

The deadline to claim a refund is 31st January 2021.

Claims can be made online or by telephone and take up to 12 weeks to be processed.  You will need the donor’s UK bank account number and sort code to receive the refund, once approved.

You can apply for a refund online here or call the Refund Helpline on 0300 456 0300 – option 6.
