According to targets set by the NHS, it is expected to take no more than 15 minutes for a patient to be handed into the care of hospital emergency department staff once an ambulance arrives at hospital. The ambulance crew are then expected to clean their vehicle and be available to respond to a 999 call within another 15 minutes. However, a recent report by East of England Ambulance Service shows that in June an additional 374 hours were spent by ambulance staff treating patients who could not be admitted to Colchester General Hospital within 15 minutes of their arrival.

Colchester General Hospital has the highest wait time of the five NHS Hospital Trusts within Essex and unfortunately has been consistently number one this year for wait times (within the East of England), except in April when they were a very close second. An average of 526 hours per month has been spent by ambulance staff at the hospital each month treating patients before they could be admitted to A&E – time when the ambulance should have been able to respond to 999 calls.



A spokesman for Colchester General Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust told the East Anglian Daily Times that

  • The number of ambulances arriving at Colchester Hospital in the three months from April 2015 was 9.7% higher than the equivalent quarter last year
  • The average number of people attending Colchester Hospital Emergency Department increased from a daily average of 187 in January to 232 in June 2015
  • Colchester is one of the fastest growing districts in the country in terms of population and these figures reflect this growth

The spokesman added that the Hospital was continuing to work with ambulance service colleagues to minimise the issue of handover delays.”

The ambulance service has itself been under pressure over the last few years to improve its response times and targets. However the benefit of these improvements will be limited, if not irrelevant, if there are not adequate handover facilities at the receiving hospital. Often patients brought to hospital by ambulance require urgent treatment by specialist medical teams and we know too well that delays in providing this treatment can have detrimental effects. Particularly in view of the fact that Colchester’s population is growing, resources clearly need to be focused on minimising handover delays so that patients have the quickest possible access to specialist treatment once they have been handed over by the ambulance crew to the hospital.”
