The use of hoists has become an integral part of delivering health and social care services, particularly in care homes. People can fall during hoisting and be injured for a number of reasons, such as:

  • Wrong size of sling used for the size of the person
  • Wrong type of hoist used for a specific task
  • Using the wrong sling and hoist together
  • Poor maintenance of equipment
  • Being left unattended in a hoist or in a position in which the patient might be at risk
  • The hoist overturning
  • Not using the safety harness
