Studies have shown that there is a high possibility of being exposed to a medication error in a care home. The types of error that might occur are:

  • Prescribing error – an incorrect dosage or timing of doses, or prescribing incorrect medication for the problem
  • Monitoring error – a patient should be regularly monitored whilst taking some types of medicine. A common error in this area is a failure to request that monitoring
  • Dispensing
  • Administration

For the most part these errors have negligible consequences, but in some cases they have the potential to cause very serious harm.
